Its design symbolizes the principles of the yin and yang in Oriental philosophy. The circle in the center of the Korean flag is divided into two equal parts. The upper red section represents the proactive cosmic forces of the yang. Conversely, the lower blue section represents the responsive cosmic forces of the yin. The two forces together embody the concepts of continual movement, balance and harmony that characterize the sphere of infinity. The circle is surrounded by four trigrams, one in each corner. Each trigram symbolizes one of the four universal elements: heaven (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tong.visitkorea.or.kr\/enu\/AK\/272759_1_2.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>), earth (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tong.visitkorea.or.kr\/enu\/AK\/272759_1_3.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>), fire (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tong.visitkorea.or.kr\/enu\/AK\/272759_1_4.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>), and water (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tong.visitkorea.or.kr\/enu\/AK\/272759_1_5.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>).\u00a0(from <a href=\"http:\/\/english.visitkorea.or.kr\/enu\/index.kto\">KTO<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>Seoul<\/h2>\n<p><b>Seoul<\/b> (<span class=\"nowrap\"><small>English<\/small> <small>pronunciation:<\/small> <span class=\"IPA\" title=\"Representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)\">\/<\/span><span class=\"IPA nopopups\"><span title=\"'s' in 'sigh'\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"IPA nopopups\"><span title=\"\/o\u028a\/ long 'o' in 'bode'\">o\u028a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"IPA nopopups\"><span title=\"'l' in 'lie'\">l<\/span><\/span><span class=\"IPA\" title=\"Representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)\">\/<\/span><\/span>; <small>Korean:\u00a0<\/small><span class=\"IPA\" title=\"Representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)\">[s\u02b0\u028c.ul]<\/span>)\u00a0\u2014 officially the <b>Seoul Special City<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 is the capital and largest metropolis\u00a0of South Korea, forming the heart of the <a title=\"Seoul Capital Area\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seoul_Capital_Area\">Seoul Capital Area<\/a>, home to 10 million of the nation\u2019s 48 million people. Seoul is located in the central region of the Korean Peninsula. Seoul is the center of finance, politics, commerce, recreation, education and culture, and is home to major corporations, banks, government offices, schools, theaters, and entertainment facilities. The wide and beautiful Han river (Hangang) flows through Seoul and serves as a lifeline for the heavily concentrated population. There are rich and satisfying variety of things to see and do for residents and visitors aliked.<\/p>\n<h2>Climate<\/h2>\n<p>Korea\u2019s climate is regarded as a continental climate from a temperate standpoint and a monsoon climate from a precipitation standpoint. The climate of Korea is characterized by four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn are rather short, summer is hot and humid, and winter is cold and dry with abundant snowfall.
